AISHE Report 2021 Released: Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ today approved the release of the All India Survey on Higher Education i.e. AISHE Report 2021. The All India Survey on Higher Education provides a birds eye-view on key performance indicators on the current status of Higher education in the country. As per the report published today, the higher education sphere has witnessed 11.4% growth in terms of student enrolment during the last five years. Moreover, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education in India has increased to 27.1%, which a marginal growth over last year’s number of 26.3%.

Student Enrolment Growth: As reported earlier, the AISHE report indicates that there has been a growth of 11.4% in student enrolments from the period of 2015-16 to 2019-20.
Rise in Female Enrolment: During the same period, the enrolment of female students in the courses of higher education has also seen growth of 18.2%.
Growth in Total Enrolment: Moreover, the overall student enrolment during the last 1 year has witnessed a growth of 3.04%. This in absolute numbers translate to growth of 11.36 lakh (3.04 per cent) i.e. from 3.85 crore for 2019-20 as compared to 3.74 crore in 2018-19. Total enrolment in 2014-15 was 3.42 crore.
Gender Parity Index: Another key parameter tracked by AISHE Report is that Gender Parity Index (GPI), which indicates proportional representation of female and male in higher education. It presents access to higher education for either of the genders in the country. GPI has also grown from 1.00 in 2018-19 to 1.01 in 2019-20.
Gross Enrolment Ratio Rises: Along with the other parameters, one of the key indicators that has shown growth is the Gross Enrolment Ratio. Gross Enrolment indicates ratio of enrolment in higher education to the population in the eligible age group (18-23) years. As per AISHE Report 2021, GER has improved by 0.8% i.e. GER of students belonging to the eligible age group enrolled in Higher Education in 2019-20 is 27.1 per cent against 26.3 per cent in 2018-19 and 24.3 per cent in 2014-2015.
Course-wise Break of Enrolled Students
Another factor that is tracked by the AISHE report is the course-wise or stream-wise enrolment of students into different courses. As per the report published today, during the last year, a total of 3.38 crore students have enrolled in programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Of this number, around 85% i.e. 2.85 crore have joined 6 major programmes or streams i.e. Humanities, Science, Commerce, Engineering and Technology, Medical Science and IT and Computer. In terms of number of students studying at different levels, the number of students pursuing PhD has also grown during last years i.e. from 1.17 lakh in 2014-15 to 2.03 lakh in 2019-20.
